    Payload
Low data rate (LDR) EHF payload is built by TRW and has 192 channels with rates between 75 and 2400 bps. Block 2 spacecraft will carry the LDR in addition to a Medium Data Rate (MDR) payload built by Hughes. The MDR will provide rates of 4800 bps to 1.544 Mbps per channel.
3-axis stabilized. Two large solar arrays.as many as 10,000 users will be able to access the system at any given time.
Other segments of the Milstar antenna suite include two crosslink antennas at the ends of the satellite wings. On the left wing are the helical Ultra High Frequency antennas, two of the three directional spot beam antennas (the third is hidden by the wing structure), and the box-shaped agile beam antennas. The large solar arrays generate power to operate the satellite.Lockheed Martin Space Systems is the prime contractor for theUS$750 million 4537 kg (10,000 lbm) military satellite communications system. The MILSTAR uplink/downlink frequency is 44/20 GHz.
    Power (EOL) 5.000 kW

    T-SAT
    http://www.space.com/spacenews/archi...ch_082404.html
As envisioned, the T-Sat system would incorporate laser-optical telecommunications payloads to dramatically increase the bandwidth available to U.S. forces. The Space Based Radar would track moving ground targets worldwide 24 hours a day, regardless of weather conditions.

The Air Force had hoped to start launching the Space Based Radar satellites around 2012.

A visual image that would take 2 minutes to process with the Milstar II satellite system would take less than a second with TSAT. A radar image from a Global Hawk UAV, or a multi-gigabyte radar image from space-based radar, would take 12 and 88 minutes, respectively, to process in current networks, and less than a second with the TSAT network.

The system ultimately will replace the Milstar and Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) programs and provide the Global Information Grid network extension to mobile warfighters; sensors; weapons; and communications, command and control nodes located on UAVs, piloted aircraft, on the ground, in the air, at sea or in space

    Spread-spectrum

This is a technique in which a Signalling (telecommunication)signal is transmitted on a bandwidth considerably larger than the frequency content of the original information.

Spread-spectrum telecommunications is a signal structuring technique that employs direct sequence, frequency hopping or a hybrid of these, which can be used for multiple access and/or multiple functions

This is done for a variety of reasons, including increasing resistance to natural interference or jamming and to prevent hostile detection.

Signal intelligence in the Gulf War

    http://www.fas.org/spp/military/doco...ds/signals.htm

During the early days of February, it was reported that Soviet advisors were providing the Iraqi "military with information about the times US spy satellites pass overhead... The information on the Soviet action was gathered from what the sources described as an 'extremely sensitive source,' a term often use to describe communications intercepts."(13) And during the second week of February, it was reported that "Allied electronic eavesdroppers intercepted Russian voices communicating on Iraqi military radio channels... allied military and diplomatic officials doubt the intercepts were conversations from Russian-speaking Iraqis. The communications were overheard at the corps, division and battalion levels, indicating a large Soviet military presence with Iraqi ground forces."(14)

Signals intelligence was central to efforts to attack Iraqi leadership assets, including Saddam Hussein himself. "Saddam has changed his daily routine and movements as a result of disclosures that US air forces had targeted him, his family, his mistress and members of his family."
